A new world: remote work requires new communication

You’re not alone, if you find yourself working from home these days. Millions of people, across multiple industries, are and have been working from home for months and it came with a set of multiple challenges. I must admit, that I too, went through an adjustment period, even though I was used to working on the go. Right now, the main difference is, that there really is nowhere to go.

How often have you encountered a “one-size-fits-all” solution in any space that genuinely worked for you? If you did, chances are, you can count them on one hand.

Over the past year, adjusting to WFH as projects and bookings in the event industry dried up, a new opportunity presented itself to me: to join a start-up built on the foundation of “nowhere to go”, which doesn’t mean it is going nowhere. Quite the opposite is true. Building a company with a remote workforce allowed us at PrtX to reevaluate some of the long-held beliefs and business principles. What we came to realize is that in this ever-changing world, though it may seem standing still right now, that ideas, collaboration and innovation can happen anywhere at any time, as long as the main focus lies on one aspect: Communication.

The marketplace is filling up fast with tools, software and programs promising to be the “one-size-fits-all” solution to improve your company’s communication. But are claims like these ever true? How often have you encountered a “one-size-fits-all” solution in any space that genuinely worked for you? If you did, chances are, you can count them on one hand.

Given that I’m talking about people, your people, who are individuals that live by different values, think differently and ultimately work differently, you need a tailored approach if you want to see increases in employee satisfaction, engagement and performance.

Each aspect of our PrtX business has its unique goals which require a different setting and tone. If we want our team to brainstorm effectively, using a channel in our messaging platform may not yield the best results. If we use that same messaging platform & create a project specific channel where our team is working against the clock to meet a deadline, then we have a case where goal, setting and tone align.

In our first few months, we took the time to work through various options, which allowed us to amass valuable experiences. This formative exercise was not just valuable in enabling us to become a better consultancy, but it also laid the ground work of our best practices that help us today to perform our best for you, our clients.

In my next post, I will take a closer look at key aspects that are essential to successful digital communication, which hold true whether your audience are your colleagues or clients.

Auf Wiedersehen and until then, take care.
